Over 240 pc increase in cases of suicide by students in State

Statistics received from the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) show that students’ suicide cases have increased by over 240 per cent in the State with 4,700 students committing suicide.

The figures show that there has been a steady rise in suicides from 199 to 645 in the year 2005-2014. One of the major reasons behind all these suicides cases is the fear of failure in examination.

This was stated at a workshop organised here on Friday by the CII Young Indians at BSSS College by renowned psychologist Prof Vinay Mishra.

It was also addressed by famous counselor Shweta Kataria. Parents and teachers besides Young Indians members attended the workshop.

Prof Mishra said many young people who are at risk of suicide attend school and exhibit warning signs , if recognised and acted on, could prevent death or injury and reduce emotional suffering.

Eating more or less, sleeping too much or too little, isolating from others, using alcohol, cigarettes or drugs, nervous habits such as nail biting or pacing are some of the signals parents should keep a watch.

Besides they should also look for other symptoms such as memory problem, inability to concentrate, seeing only the negative and constant worrying.

Kataria said that the parents and teachers should also look for physical and sexual abuse, personality disorder, bullying and drug addiction symptoms in children.

Emotional instability, performance pressure such as academics and exam stress too play a major role besides family reasons that include divorced parents, too much violence at home and too much control.
