Congress leader Ajay Singh on Friday took a dig at BJP over its ‘new-found’ love for Muslims, saying it was the same party which had charged the Congress with appeasing the community.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party itself is now following a policy of appeasing Muslims and by doing this, it is betraying them,” the leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly told media persons here.
Singh said Congress had always believed in the ‘secular spirit’ of the Constitution and the party had always worked to ensure that no injustice was committed to anyone.
He said the State BJP Government had first issued an order for verses from the Bhagwad Gita to be taught in madrasas and then withdrew it. It also printed advertisements on Ganesh Chaturthi and Janmashtami, but had never issued advertisements during Eid or Christmas, he claimed.
The BJP was trying to bring Muslims wearing burqas and skull caps to a meeting to be addressed by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, said Ajay and claimed that Congress would win 136 out of the 230 seats in the coming elections in Madhya Pradesh.
However, the leader of the Opposition declined to speak out anything regarding as how he reached this figure.
“I can tell you how I reached this number but I will not do so now and will tell you about this after the election results are declared,” Singh told.
Asked if he would take a vow like Digvijay Singh not to contest elections for 10 years if the Congress loses this time, Ajay said Digvijay had taken the vow after being the Chief Minister for 10 years, while he was only the leader of Opposition.
When asked if he would become the Chief Minister, Ajay only said he will not continue to be the leader of Opposition post results.
