MP faces sudden weather shift with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and dust storms

Staff Reporter

Madhya Pradesh experienced a sudden shift in weather on Saturday, as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and dust storms swept across multiple districts, bringing both relief and disruption.

Bhopal saw a dust storm in the evening, followed by light drizzle. The change in weather brought some relief from the heat, though the city witnessed a brief reduction in visibility due to the storm. Meanwhile, other areas of the state were severely affected by the weather events. Tikamgarh was plunged into darkness as strong winds uprooted trees and caused power outages. Gotegaon in Narsinghpur was hit by hailstorms and heavy rain, while Ganjbasoda in Vidisha faced a fierce half-hour storm.

Chhindwara, Seoni, Sheopur, Ashoknagar, and Shivpuri also reported intense weather activity, including hailstorms that caused significant damage to crops and property. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for thunderstorms, hail, and lightning in several districts, warning that these conditions may persist until May 6.

In a contrasting event, Khandwa recorded a heat stroke-related death, highlighting the stark weather extremes within the state. Meteorologists attribute the erratic conditions to an active cyclonic circulation and a western disturbance, which have contributed to the unpredictable weather patterns in the region.

Over the past 24 hours, isolated rainfall was recorded in Chambal, Rewa, Jabalpur, and Sagar divisions, while Shahdol division experienced showers at multiple locations. Light drizzle also occurred in isolated areas of Bhopal, Sagar, Gwalior, and Ujjain divisions, while other parts of the state remained dry.

Day temperatures saw a significant drop by 2.7°C in the Gwalior division compared to the previous day, while other regions saw no major changes. In Rewa division, day temperatures fell sharply by 4.2°C, while Gwalior, Shahdol, and Sagar divisions recorded below-normal temperatures between 2.3°C and 2.8°C. The rest of the state maintained normal day temperatures.

Night temperatures rose notably by 2.4°C to 3.9°C in Jabalpur and Shahdol divisions compared to the previous day, while minimal variation was observed elsewhere. Overall, night temperatures across all divisions remained within the normal range.

The IMD has forecasted more thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (50-60 kmph), and hailstorms at isolated locations in Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur-Kalan, Anuppur, Shahdol, Umaria, Dindori, Katni, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, and Pandhurna districts.

Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and slightly lower wind speeds (40-50 kmph) are expected in isolated areas of Vidisha, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Agar, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, and Maihar districts. Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert for sudden weather changes and take necessary precautions to avoid potential hazards.

The sudden weather changes have caused widespread disruption in various districts, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure and agriculture are vulnerable. In Tikamgarh, power outages affected several localities for hours, disrupting daily activities and creating difficulties for residents. Similarly, hailstorms in Gotegaon and other parts of Narsinghpur have left crops damaged, especially in areas where farmers were already struggling with the dry spell earlier this season. Authorities have advised farmers to assess the damage and take necessary steps to minimize further losses.
