Staff Reporter

Amid heated exchanges between the Treasury and the Opposition benches, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Tuesday greeted women folk on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Before the Question Hour began, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra congratulated all women on this special day and informed that lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had organised a two-day workshop on Women’s empowerment in New Delhi on March 5 and 6.

The workshop was attended by State Women and Child Development Minister Maya Singh and former Minister Archana Chitnis, who also presented a proposal which was accepted unanimously.

However, after congratulating women folk, Deputy leader of the Opposition Bala Bachchan alleged that the Government gave only symbolic statements on the welfare of women while the situation was  its opposite at present. He said that the condition of women in the State remained pitiable. Intervening Congress leader Speaker Sitasaran Sharma asked Bachchan not to indulge in politics over the issue.

As soon as the Speaker took up the first point of the Question Hour, Minister Maya Singh said she was thanking all women folk from the core of her heart and informed the Government had initiated various measures for the welfare of the women and to strengthen them economically.

Mukesh Nayak of Congress made some objectionable remarks on the Minister’s statement. After which, another Minister lal Singh Arya said it was an insult to all women and the Congress Member should tender his apology. Other members from the Treasury bench also joined the chorus.

Amid exchanges of verbal duel, the Speaker took up the question and members took their seats.
