The danger of mosquito borne diseases looms large on the city, putting the administration and the Health Department on alert.

In the wake of intermittent rains that have been lashing the city, the risk of mosquito borne diseases is looming large. According to medical experts there is a high risk of transmission of dengue, malaria and other mosquito borne diseases in many parts of the city in the coming days.

The medium to low temperature and the high moisture content in the air are conducive for the swine flu virus and if the administration does not take adequate preventive measures swine flu will be another calamity waiting to explode.

Last year, due to the lethargic attitude of the Health Department and the District Administration more than half of the city was under the grip of viral fever, malaria, chikungunya and dengue.

Speaking to the media persons, Anant Kumar, Health Officer, Gwalior Municipal Corporation said that fogging will be carried out everywhere in the city along with indoor spraying and anti-larval operation at water pools. He added that a phone number too will be provided and that if anyone requires fogging at his place he can contact the corporation authorities.

Dr MK Saxena, CMHO of Gwalior said that the Health Department is fully prepared to handle mosquito borne diseases and that instructions have been sent to all government and private hospitals to stay on alert.

The medical experts have advised the citizens, especially children and teenagers to desist from consuming junk food. The advisory also says to drink only boiled water. The experts have also asked citizens to turn over empty buckets and utensils so that excess water is not collected in them. The water coolers should be cleaned periodically and water must be emptied out when not in use.
