The tragic death of 18-year-old Shivansh Gupta, a first-year MBBS student at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, has shocked the community. Shivansh reportedly committed suicide on Thursday after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel. He succumbed to severe head and limb injuries in the ICU, as confirmed by an autopsy conducted on Friday.
Shivansh’s family has accused senior students of ragging, claiming that the harassment led to the tragic incident. His uncle, Dinesh Gupta, expressed concerns that ragging was widespread in the hostel, and the college administration had failed to address the issue. He pointed to a phone call Shivansh made to his mother three days before his death, during which he allegedly mentioned being harassed for owning a new motorcycle.
Dinesh Gupta has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including examining students' mobile phones for evidence of ragging. He has also called for the accountability of those responsible for the harassment.
In response, Dean Dr. Naveen Saxena rejected the allegations of ragging, stating that the hostel housed only first-year students, making ragging less likely. The college has since formed a five-member committee to investigate the matter. Authorities have also recorded statements from hostel mates in an attempt to understand the circumstances surrounding Shivansh’s death.
Shivansh, a NEET qualifier from Rewa, had bright prospects, with two elder sisters already pursuing careers in medicine. His family is calling for a high-level inquiry, accusing the institution of negligence. They are demanding justice and accountability for their son’s untimely death.
The case has reignited concerns about ragging and institutional negligence, prompting calls for stronger measures to ensure a safer and more supportive environment for students. Investigations are ongoing, and the college faces growing pressure to address the issue and prevent future incidents.
