Laparoscopy, commonly known as key-hole surgery, has become a preferred technique for gallbladder removal due to its numerous benefits. However, experts from AIIMS Bhopal caution that this seemingly simple operation can turn disastrous if not performed by skilled and experienced surgeons.

"While laparoscopic gallbladder removal is generally safe, there are instances when serious complications can happen during the procedure such as bile leaks, jaundice due to bile passage blockage, or damage to the liver's blood supply." Dr. Vishal Gupta, Head of Surgical Gastroenterology at AIIMS Bhopal informed.

Dr. Pravesh Shukla, Assistant Professor of Gastrosurgery, stressed the importance of proper training for performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy safely. He stated, "Without adequate training, what should be a routine simple operation can quickly turn into a nightmare for both the patient and the surgeon."

Surgical Gastroenterology department at AIIMS, Bhopal has been seeing such cases regularly.  "In the past year alone, we have successfully reconstructed bile passages in four patients referred to us from various parts of Madhya Pradesh. And two such cases are being managed at present" added Dr Gupta.
