Since there is no marked difference in pollution levels outdoors and indoors, the school closure becomes irrelevant, and misplaced,” Kundu said in his letter.

“Further, I must point out that the school closure policy assumes that the families own air purifiers.   This isn’t the case except for a very, very small fraction of Delhi population.  Since the families don’t own air purifiers, the school closures policy on account of poor air quality achieves nothing. Lastly,   the school closure now continuing for almost 600  days is deeply problematic from a  standpoint of learning loss which different studies have pointed out to be significant and have adverse long term implications for children,  country’s economy,  and human development growth,” Kundu said.

Meanwhile, agencies in Delhi seeking to resume construction and demolition activities have been asked to write to the environment department. Delhi Government will forward their requests to the CAQM for consideration.

City Government has received 6,975 complaints through the Green Delhi app, and 5,686 of these were resolved. The maximum number of complaints was directed to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Delhi’s air quality may improve from December 16 onwards.
