History is being created in Madhya Pradesh by introducing MBBS studies in Hindi language. This is for the first time in the country that such an attempt is being made  in the State.

Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang talked to the Pioneer at length about this unique initiative. He stated that this initiative was taken on the directives of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan who wished Hindi language should be introduced in medical education. Besides, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also stressed on introducing different curriculums in Hindi language in the recently launched National Education Police (NEP).

Detailing about the medical education in Hindi, he stated that there would be no special course or classroom for those students studying in Hindi language. The classroom, students and the lecturers would remain the same under this initiative. Only those students who face difficulty in understanding the lectures and books in English language, would have a facility to understand the subject in their own language, he added.

Three MBBS subjects– anatomy, physiology and biochemistry – will be taught in Hindi to first-year students in all 13 government medical colleges of the state.

Sarang stated that three books of main subjects in MBBS first year have been transliterated, by using the same terminology used in English language. It has been written in Devanagari script only. For example, the term 'Angioplasty' has not been translated into Hindi. The term has been written in Devanagari.

To introduce the books in Hindi language, in February this year, a task force was formed and feedback was taken from lecturers and senior professionals. Suggestions were also invited through government portals. The surveys conducted by WHO also revealed that those who received medical education in their mother tongue were the best professionals in those countries.

Sarang stated that a Mandar war room has been formed in the Gandhi Medical College (GMC), where a committee of 97 professionals is working round the clock and working on this unique work. At present the work on second year books is going on.

The books for second year might come up in the next three to four months, he said, adding that the war room has been named after Mandar mountain on which the ocean was churned.

"We have made all arrangements through Universities so that the students would be able to appear in examinations in Hindi language. We would take the medical education upto PG level and super-speciality," he added.

He said that it is a matter of happiness that the work of preparing Hindi syllabus of MBBS has been completed within the time-limit prescribed by the Medical Education Department.

The Minister informed that on October 16, MBBS first year Hindi course books would be released in a grand program at Lal Parade Gound, Bhopal with Union Home and Cooperative Minister Shah as the chief guest. This day is significant for Medical Education Department, Madhya Pradesh, the country and for Hindi.
