Written by a noted Hindi poet Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, the play Hawalaat focuses upon the lifestyle people have adopted after India got independence. The play is a satire on society and difference in the living standard of the people.
The story of the play surrounds four characters, which includes three teenage boys of low caste and a police constable. The boys are unemployed and to have food and shelter, they ask the police constable to arrest them. The constable, however, cannot arrest them as they have not committed any crime.
Then some situations arises that gives an extremely dramatic climax to the play.
The play begin with a strong narration depicting the lifestyle people followed before the Britishers came to India followed by the British era and then it totally focused upon the present situation of the society.
It is to be noted that after the independence people have divided the society into three categories, high class, middle class and low class. This categorization has created a boundary between humanity and peace. This play somewhere gives out a message to the society that nothing is bigger than humanity.
All the characters left a memorable impression over the audiences. The props, backdrop of the play and the poetic dialogues added more zeal in the presentation. The audiences were awestruck with the presentation of the artistes.
