It is said that nature has its own artistic ways to amaze man even in the most unexpected ways and artistic creativity on a ‘lauki’ is one of them.
Tuma or Gourd art has taken the gourd beyond the utilitarian use of art. The Gourd Art has set up new image of creativity before the art enthusiasts.
Jagat Ram Devangan from Bastar, Chhattisgarh is the man the charismatic ‘Tuma Art’. Currently Jagat is in Bhopal conducting a workshop at Alliance Francaise de Bhopal. While having a candid talk with The Pioneer, Jagat shared the facts about the gourd art.
“Gourd art is a traditional art is practiced since ages. During the olden times, the gourd was used as a water container,” said Jagat. Elaborating further he said, “Gradually people started decorating the gourds. Slowly it gained popularity in the State.”
Jagat was inspired by the structure of the vessel and began experimenting with the form. Choosing interesting shapes and patterns he created an entirely new craft form and named it Tuma craft.
“Earlier, the gourds which were a waste were used for the craft. But now we grow gourd solely for artistic purpose,” shared Jagat.
Beautiful art pieces like lamps, show pieces and more are created with gourd.
“It has a natural shape, so we do not need to shape it again. We can paint it and carve beautiful paintings to on it,” added Jagat.
While sharing about the process, Jagat said, “First the gourd is dried in the sun. After it becomes dry and brown it is washed with mud and water. The inside contents are removed with hot knife making it completely hollow and then the designs are crafted on it.”
Interestingly, Gourd art is practiced solely by Jagat Ram Devangan in the entire region. He is also been awarded with the state awards from Chhattisgarh Government, National Merit certificates, the Kalamani award and Surajkund crafts mela award as well for his innovative creative style.
While signing off he said, “I want the art to reach beyond the boundaries of this country and spread in across the globe.
