Gwalior Municipal Corporation has been taking various measures to improve the sanitation of the city and its surrounding areas. With cases of illegal dumping of waste in the city going up significantly, the corporation authorities have started on-the-spot fines to punish those littering streets and open grounds.

Speaking to the media persons here, Gwalior Municipal Commissioner said that the citizens of Gwalior are very much conscious about cleanliness, but some citizens are still not seen to follow their responsibility towards cleanliness. To keep the city clean, it becomes necessary to take the unpleasant decision of penalising such persons. He added that those sanitation workers and the supervisors of the GMC who fail to do their duties properly too will be penalised.

The commissioner further said that the entire corporation is being cleaned regularly and that this campaign will continue in a comprehensive manner. In this, work is being done to free the city from pollution and keep it clean by using scientific methods, garbage collection vehicles and disposal.

As per the new notification for the revised fines, throwing waste on road will attract a penalty of ?500. Fine for open defecation has been increased from the existing ?500 to ?1,000 and defecation in public by pets has been enhanced from the existing fine of Rs 200 to Rs 1,000.

The commissioner also said that it is necessary to take punitive action against those who try to defeat the cleanliness campaigns through their actions, so this decision has been taken and cooperation is expected from the citizens.
