Compared to boys, girls are better equipped for almost all fields and are more able to cope with the modern way of life. It is much easier to remain within the boundaries of where you feel comfortable than it is to face the fear of attempting things beyond them. But by limiting yourself to what you already know, you are missing out on new and exciting opportunities, life experiences, and personal growth.

These views were expressed by Mary Kom, the five-time world boxing champion and Olympics medalist on the inaugural day of the two day Veerangana laxmi Bai Balidan Mela, held in front of the laxmi Bai statue in Gwalior. This year is the 160th anniversary of Rani laxmi Bai’s martyrdom.

During the inaugural day function of the fair, Mary Kom, the Padma Bhushan awardee was conferred with the ‘Veerangaan Samman.’ She was presented with Rs 2 lakhs in cash and a certificate by Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, the Cabinet Minister of Higher Education and Narotam Mishra, Cabinet Minister of Public Relations, Government of Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking on the occasion, Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya said that the Martyrs Fair (Balidan Mela) instills the feelings of patriotism and is an occasion to infuse nationalistic feelings in the hearts of young people. He also said that Gwalior, apart from being the birthplace of Tansen is also the place where laxmi Bai gave up her life for the nation. He added that it is the sacred duty of every person to get inspiration from her martyrdom and serve the nation in every way possible.

Patriotic songs by Padma Shri Anuradha Paudwal enthralled the audience who had turned up in thousands despite the scorching heat. The function was also attended by Mayor, Vivek Shewalkar, as Chief Guest and GDA Chairman, Abhay Choudhari among others.
