The (NSSO) is one of the largest organisations in the world that conducts nation-wide surveys on the socioeconomic conditions of the country’s population each year. The NSSO has been instrumental in developing a strong database on various Socio-Economic parameters through its countrywide sample surveys, which have helped the Central as well as State Governments in developmental planning and taking policy initiatives. The other large size sample surveys conducted by NSSO include the extent of urbanisation (UFS), Annual Survey of Industries (ASI), Agriculture Statistics (AS) and Consumer Price Index (CPI).

In the current round, commencing from January 1, 2014, the NSSO and the Directorates of Economics and Statistics of various States will be collecting data on Health and Education during its 71st round to be conducted for a period of 6 months from January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014.

The survey on health aims to generate basic quantitative information on the health sector. The most important component of this survey is the information relevant to the determination of the prevalence rate of morbidity among various age-sex groups in different regions of country.

For the first time in an NSS health survey, the data collected will enable assessment of the role of alternative schools of medicine in respect of prevalence of use, cost of treatment and type of ailments covered. Besides, the survey will ascertain the extent of use of private and public hospitals of childbirth, the condition of the 60 plus population and the estimates separately for males and females.

The another aspect of the 71st  round survey is to collect information on participation of persons aged 5-2g years in the education system, private expenditure incurred on education, examining the extent of educations wastage and their causes and IT literacy of persons aged 14 years and above.
