Drive to check speed governors next month

With the increasing population and expanding city limits, number of vehicles has also increased, but the authorities are not taking any measures to check the speed of vehicles.

As per rules under traffic management system, speed governor need to be installed in all the vehicles, but the authorities do not check the vehicles for checking the speed.

City with its expanding limits have witnessed a massive increase in the number of vehicles but with the increased number of vehicles the support system to provide safe and smooth commuting is absent and is severely affecting the traffic management system.

The system has never been updated to handle the increased number of vehicles with the same infrastructure and less developed technological devices.  Going with the figures, in the last nine months around 2643 accidents have been reported in the city and of them 171 persons were killed. This data reveals that the measures to curb deaths and accidents due to speeding errant drivers roaming across the city are required very much.

DIG Bhopal Shreenivasa Varma said that speed governor kit has to be installed in private vehicles also but strict implementation is not done even after the orders have been issued by administration and police. A special drive to the monitor speed governance would be conducted next month, he added.

According to a notification issued last year all the commercial vehicles including public buses should be fitted with commercial vehicles including public buses from April 1, 2014 but no heed was paid by the administration and police to implement the circular as the vehicles could be found moving freely on city at high speedy risking several lives.

The notification, issued by the ministry on December 31, specified that even old transport vehicles need to be fitted with speed governors or limiting devices before April 1, 2014. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Vilas Baghmare told that there is lack of awareness among the masses about the speed limits which is a worrying concern and a drive on speed governance would be conducted in the city which would start from the 1st of the next month. Baghmare informed that the speed governor kit has been installed in the public means of transports specially college, school and office buses, but there is no provision of installing such kits in private vehicles.
