Docs shed light on false fear of Cerebral Palsy

SR

Only 30 per cent of the person who are considered to be suffering from cerebral palsy actually have the disease said Dr Gauri Pandit while addressing a workshop organised here in Swami Vivekananda Institute of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Spine (SVINNS) on Sunday.

Dr Pandit further said that lots of wrong concepts about cerebral palsy prevail in the society like it is considered that CP patient are mentally disable but this is not true.

Dr Nagda, a renowned Pediatric Orthosurgeon from Hinduja Hospital of Mumbai said that cerebral palsy can be cured, out of 100 mental disability cases only one is developmental disability and out of 100 developmental disability cases only 30 are cerebral palsy.

Dr Nagda said that deformity in cerebral palsy is caused due to spastic muscles are not able to relax and cause unequal muscle forces.

The muscles under tension cannot grow as well as the normal muscles which cause relative shortening of muscles and fixed contractures.

As the child’s age advances there are secondary contractures in joints and rotational deformities in bones which causes lever arm dysfunction.

Dr Nagda explained about the treatment options available for spastic cerebral palsy, he said that Batulinum toxin is one of the most effective anti spastic agents used for control of focal spasticity.

BTA is injected into the muscle it results in relaxation of overactive muscles. If the BTA is injected by Ultrasound guided technique then it ensures precise action, lower dose and no failure rates by allowing accurate positioning of the needle.

Dr Pandit said that the objective behind organizing the seminar was to bring awareness regarding CP among the pediatricians, orthopedicians and surgeons who deal with CP patients.

Dr Pandit explained about the diseases which have symptoms similar to CP but are different, she explained how to differentiate CP and other diseases.

Dr Sunil Pandit in the seminar explained about epilepsy and neurosurgical treatment of spasticity and dystonia.
