Disabled children take out candlelight vigil

Staff Reporter

Condolence to the martyrs of the Bhopal Union Carbide gas tragedy was expressed by the Special Children of Chingari Rehabilitation Centre by conducting a small peaceful candle vigil at Neelam Park, on Tuesday evening.

Children with different type of congenital disabilities like cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, hearing impaired etc have participated in this candle light vigil.

The main motto of this peaceful candle light vigil is to remember the pain and trauma their loved ones have gone through. And these children would also want the world to learn a lesson from this tragedy and to take preventive measures to avoid the occurrence of any such disaster in the future.

Chingari Trust has undertaken care of the children born with congenital disorders to parents affected by poisonous gas released from Union Carbide/Dow factory and ground water contamination thereafter.

As of today nearly eight hundred such children are already registered with Chingari Rehabilitation Centre, with about two hundred children coming each day with their mothers to receive   physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, special education, sports sessions, supplementary nutrition provisions and transportation facilities all free of charge.

Managing Trustee of the trust Rasheeda says the victims continue to fight for justice. “Physiologically, women still continue to suffer and have several hormonal problems. In fact, if you say that you have been living in Bhopal, grooms automatically reject the bride as women continue to give birth to children with disabilities,” she said. Another Managing Trustee of the trust Champa said though grand promises were made both by the Government and Union Carbide, neither had taken responsibility to help them earn a decent living.
