Couple, two others held for assaulting cop

Staff Reporter

Four persons including a 36-year-old woman and her husband have been arrested on Sunday on the charge of beating a police constable, who was in uniform on Saturday night.

However, no action was taken on the complaint by the woman, who claimed that the policeman had caught her arm with bad intentions. The couple has been identified as Dhananjay Sharma and Aparna Sharma.

The incident was reported at the Natraj petrol pump, whose video went vital on social media since Saturday night. The woman and her husband accused the police constable of molesting the woman by catching hold of her arm. The eyewitnesses also alleged that the policeman was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

In the morning, the police officials flung into action and hospitalized the constable. It  was claimed that the constable was on duty, when the couple beat him up.

While talking to ‘The Pioneer’ DIG Santosh Kumar Singh said that the constable Naresh Baghel (24) is hospitalized now and it is still being investigated, whether he was in inebriated condition or not. Surprisingly, the whole day passed and the police officials remained ignorant whether the constable was drunk or not.

The DIG claimed that even if the constable had committed any mistake, instead of taking action, they should have approached police. The people gathered could have apprehended the constable and handed over to the police in case if he had committed any indiscipline.

The very basic allegation could not be digested that the constable on duty and in uniform had held woman’s arm in presence of her husband, he said, adding that in case if the constable has done misconduct, action would be taken against him but the impulsive response by the people in the video is not justified.

Police officials said that more people could be arrested in the case, after going through CCTV footages and statements of other people.

The police have registered a case under Section 353, 323, 294, 341 and 34 of the IPC and have started further investigation.
