Cops to be trained on cyber crime

Farooq Qureshi

Before getting fully equipped at the headquarters, the State police are making efforts for providing special training in cyber crime to the police personnel in the districts. Factually, the police at their headquarters are also facing shortage of experts in cyber crime.

Number of cyber crimes across the State has increased many folds in the last few years but the lack of skilled staff to investigate cyber crime is not available and at the district level it is absent. To create expertise in investigating cyber crime at the district level saving money and human resources, two police personnel at the district level would be trained in investigating cyber crime.

On the directives of DGP Surendra Sinh, such training would be imparted to the police officers in the ranking of inspector or DSP. The training needs to be completed by the end of this fiscal year, sources added.

Addl DG Cyber crime Ashok Dohare said that lack of availability of resources in terms of human resources and equipments required for investigation was a major issue in the investigation of cases related to cyber crime.

The transfer of police personnel is a major issue in maintaining monitoring and investigative support in the cases of cyber crime in the city and state. Explaining further regarding the problem due to the transfers, Dohare told that around 2-3 months are required for training and later, if they are shifted, the cell still lacks trained staff.

Replying to a query regarding helping the district police, the Addl DG said that for example if data of a mobile phone has to be brought to the state cyber cell a police personnel from cyber cell has to visit or police personnel of that police station has to reach cyber cell and in both cases time, money and human resource are required which is not possible in the current scenario and the best possible solution to the problem is to provide basic training in handling the cases of cyber crime so that the investigation could get started and if required at later stage state cyber cell could provide them with expertise.

“If the planning would be executed according to the specified timeframe we would be able to complete the training by March 2015. The confirmation of approvals is awaited and after the approvals the trainings would be conducted in batches,” Dohare added.
