Contractual employment illegal: Kejriwal

Staff Reporter

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has said that appointing the employees on contract is not only illegal, but also against the Indian Constitution. The contractual employees are exploited by threatening to abolish their contracts, he added.

Kejriwal, also national convenor of the Aam Admi Party (AAP), was addressing the contractual employees here at the Ambedkar ground, where they had organised a dharna on Sunday. The Delhi CM reached the dharna site without any intimation and surprised the agitating employees.

He further said that the contractual employees are exploited by the officials only to make sure that they (officials) could engage in corruption. He stated that the system of appointing employees on contract should be stopped. From the dais, Kejriwal said, “The BJP government has time of only one year to regularise the contractual employees, otherwise, we would regularise them in six months.”

On this eve, State convenor of the AAP Alok Agrawal said that there is no shortage of budget, as claimed by the Govt, for regularising the contractual employees. If intentions of the Government are good, it manages budget automatically, he added.

It is to be noted that the contractual employees are agitating for their long pending demands.

They claim that there have been provision of 25 per cent reservation for guest teachers in regular posts, direct recruitment of gurujis and education employees, but there has been no policy for regularising contractual employees who have been working for more than 20 years.

The agitating employees also demand merger on regular posts, the contractual employees in boards and corporations, different departments and projects.
