Expressing concern over a spurt in drug trafficking in Madhya Pradesh, Opposition’s State vice-president laxman Singh on Wednesday said the party would soon launch a vigorous campaign against the menace.
While talking to media persons here, Singh said, “The menace is spreading its tentacles over the past eight to ten years but intensified during the past two years. The Congress will start the campaign from Mandsaur and Ratlam that are the dens.”
Drug traffickers are also active in Satna and Rewa, Singh alleged, adding that students of colleges and schools were addicted as the traffickers have access to academic institutions. Even the increasing incidents of rape and other crimes were linked to drug trafficking, he said.
Stressing on the need for enacting stringent legislation to check such trafficking, Singh said, “Several loopholes exist in the existing law and accused get off scot-free. The law should be amended as conviction rate in drug trafficking is poor. The situation calls for concerted efforts across the political spectrum.”
The leader alleged that drug traffickers spread their business in connivance with police while mafias also played major role during last year’s Assembly polls in this state.
“It is hoped that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will initiate appropriate action to snuff out the problem by taking the issue seriously. Otherwise, the Congress shall intensify its movement against drug trafficking,” Singh warned.
Ironically, laxman Singh appeared before media for the first time after his party’s shameful defeat in the lok Sabha elections in May. Till now, the party has launched several agitations cornering the State government, but he missed all of them.
