For smooth flow of traffic at the square, after construction of Cable Stay bridge, the administration has decided to remove the statue of former President of India and shorten the rotary. later, the process of removing the staue was started on Sunday night, but at the eleventh hour, Congress leaders reached the spot and objected to the action of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). Subsequently, the work could not proceed.

On Monday morning, a number of Congress leaders including district president PC Sharma and former Union Minister Suresh Pachouri reached the spot and registered their protest on the initiative of the State government.

At the spot, Pachouri talked to Bhopal Mayor Alok Sharma and later it was decided that the decision on removal of the statue and placing it some other new location would be decided after talks with Congress leaders.

Notably, the statue of Shankar Dayal Sharma was installed at the square during Congress regime in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress leaders are annoyed that the staue was being removed without the consent of former President of India’s family members.
