Monsoon is fast approaching but the open drains alongside the streets of the city are still filled with solid waste and domestic waste water, creating blockages and menacing discharge of litter and waste water.
This illegal discharge of solid waste and waste water is creating high health risks to the citizens. Besides being the source of foul smell, these open drainage systems have become breeding centers of noxious insects and pests.
Despite repeated assurances by the Municipal Corporation authorities that regular cleaning service are being carried out, most of the open drains in the city are full of filth.
It is leant from sources that the Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Vaish, during his inspection tour today was shocked to see the condition of the drains and immediately issued an ultimatum to the Asst Health Officers to clean up all the drains within three days or prepare to face consequences. Vaish, along with the Health Officer, Satpal Singh Chauhan was on an inspection tour of the wards in the Tatipur area to review the sanitary condition in the area in view of the approaching rainy season.
Despite most of the streets being swept twice a day and trash boxes emptied regularly, the sanitation standards in most areas remain dreadful, with garbage strewn all around, heaps of trash on the roadsides and stray animals feeding on it. In some areas the drains are cleaned, but the muck and the filth are placed on the roadside, making a mockery of the cleaning system.
While it is true that residents are as much to blame for the mess as the municipal authorities, it is that latter that need to get their act together and fast as the monsoon is just days away.
If the authorities don’t wake up before the monsoon sets in, the streets of this deemed Smart City will be overflowing with filthy garbage and decomposing waste.
