Christians in Bhopal celebrate Maundy Thursday

Staff Reporter

All the Christians celebrated the Lord's last supper in their respective churches on Thursday from 6 pm reminding once again the Pasca festival celebrated by Israelis after their slavery from the Egyptians with the leadership of prophet Moses.   Lord Jesus also celebrated this Pasca festival with his 12 disciples before his death inviting his disciples to have last supper with him.

During the supper Jesus took the bread and said this is my body and  took a little wine and said this is my blood and  did it in memory of me. Since then the Catholics recall this action and  celebrate Eucharist every day at different times.  To celebrate the Eucharist he established priesthood. To remind his disciples what priesthood is, he washed the feet of the  disciples and said those who wish to be my disciples should become humble  servants of others.  He gave a new commandment to the disciples "Love one another as I have loved you". Therefore Maundy Thursday is a very important day to reflect the importance of Eucharist, Priesthood, Love and Service.

Archbishop AAS Durairaj SVD washing the feet of disciples  at St Francis  Cathedral,  Jehangirabad said that Lord Jesus, in spite of the Son of God he never wanted  the equality with God the Father but became the servant of all and taught them to wash  the feet of others by giving a new meaning of love.  Christianity exists because of the service to humanity, he said. Holy Thursday  denotes the meaning of love, service and peace - added Archbishop

Just before this Maundy Thursday, all the priests of the diocese came together on last  Monday along with the Archbishop at Assumption church, Arera Colony to bless the oil of the sick,   Catechumens and  Chrism, to be used to administer the seven sacraments of the church.

Fr. Maria Stephen, the PRO said that Christians are called to serve the poor, the needy in spite of the persecution come on the way to do service to the poor.  He informed that after the Holy Mass there were long hours of adoration to the Blessed Sacrament to commemorate Good Friday (Jesus’ Passion and Death).
