Just before tabling the Budget for the year 2016-17, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) held its general council meeting on Saturday.

In the meeting, two important decisions were brought before the council for approval. They included construction of a new slaughter house and exorbitant hike in rents of BMC community halls that are also used as marriage halls.

The slaughter house to be constructed with an estimated cost of rupees twenty crore would be 18 kilometers away from the Karond square at Adampur Chawni. The decision for the construction of this new slaughter house at 3.75 acres of land was taken in the general council meeting of the Corporation held at the BMC headquarters’ assembly hall at ISBT on Saturday.

Notably, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its order over petition number 337/2014 (CS) of Vinod Kumar ordered to shift the existing slaughter house at Jinsi area of Jehangirabad on October 30, 2015.

The private party would bear expenses of the proposed construction of the slaughter house that is estimated to be about Rs 20 crore.

The slaughter house would be run and maintained by the private party for the period of twenty years.

Another proposal that was tabled in the general council meeting before the tabling of BMC annual budget for 2016-17 was over that the BMC community halls that are also used as marriage halls, would cost more.

Currently, community halls can be rented for a payment of Rs 400 per day. The rates are now estimated to go up to Rs 20,000 with BMC calling for private tenders. Proposal by civic body has finalized for 29 of the 39 community halls in city to be operated by private companies.

Congress Corporator Najma Ansari said, “BMC has proposed to tender some of the community halls for as high as Rs 19 lakh. It would increase the civic body’s revenue but impact the common man directly.”

Congress Corporators protested the move and staged a protest at the floor of the civic body hall.
