'BJP disinterested in welfare of poor people'

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Wednesday charged the BJP with not allowing discussion in Parliament on issues of public interest as it was disinterested in the welfare of poor people and farmers.

While talking to media persons, Singh told, “I have always maintained that the BJP has no interest in farmers, labourers and the poor because of which it always tries to stall proceedings in Parliament.” Discussing the delay in passing the Food Security Bill in lok Sabha in the Monsoon Session, Digvijay Singh said that government legislations which have public interest at their core should be of foremost importance to the BJP, but isn't.

“If the Bharatiya Janata Party allows Parliament to run, the Food Security Bill will be passed. The Bharatiya Janata Party has only one objective that is to ensure that the decisions taken in public interest, in the interest of the poor labourers, are not passed in the Parliament. That is their only aim,” Singh added.

“In Parliament, they are not ready for discussion. Why don't they have debates with us on why the rupee is fallingIJ We will present our side and they should bring forth their solutions, as well. However, they do not come forth with anything. They ask, where are the filesIJ The CBI is investigating the matter, they will look for the files,” he added.

The Monsoon Session has been marked with repeated disruptions and premature adjournments in both Houses since the start of the Monsoon Session. It was strange that the BJP did not want a discussion on the falling value of rupee which would give it an opportunity to make suggestions on the issue, he said, adding that instead, it was busy raising a hue and cry about the missing files related to 'Coalgate' which was a matter being looked into by the CBI, the Congress leader said.

He alleged that black marketing of onions was going on in Madhya Pradesh. “State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has failed to take steps to prevent black marketing of onions,” he said. Commenting on yesterday's violent clashes in Indore, Singh alleged that Sangh activists could possibly be behind the incident. Singh had come here to meet his sister on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
