The series of film screenings organised under West Bengal Mahotsav-2014 at Antarang Hall, Bharat Bhavan with the screening of the movie Bhuvan Shome.
The film screenings got a positive response by the movie lovers of the city. The movies of various genres were screened in the fest that was enjoyed by the movie lovers. Bhuvan Shome is a Hindi movie directed by Mrinal Sen. The cast includes Utpal Dutt (Bhuvan Shome) and Suhasini Mulay (Gauri, a village belle).
Sen based his film on a Bengali story by Banaphool (Balai Chand Mukhopadhya). The film is considered a landmark in modern Indian cinema. This was the debut film of Suhasini Mulay. Bhuvan Shome is a lonely widower, a proud old man and a strict disciplinarian. looking back on the trodden path, strewn with staunch determination and drab attitudes, Bhuvan Shome, a thoroughly unenhanced man, seeks escape in a holiday.
Off to duck shooting in Gujarat, Bhuvan Shome little raises that the rejuvenation adventure would hurt him into a world so apart that he would find it the most joyful experience in his life. His new world consists of simple, uninitiated village folks, a bullock-cart drive, marauding buffalo and Gauri.
There Gauri and Bhuvan Shome finds a fresh, throbbing pulse in a dying world. And suddenly everything lights up, perhaps heightening his sense of isolation, in his new found joy. Diligent, hard-working, and honest Bhuvan Shome is both hated, and respected in his profession.
His outlook on life is narrow and strick. This outlook is changed forever when he visits a village, in a bullock-cart, to go hunting to shoot ducks. The concluding day of the fest the screening received a satisfactory response and the audience enjoyed the show whole heartedly.
