BHEl Bhopal recently successfully manufactured and tested 295.1 MVA, 800 kV Class, single phase HVDC converter transformer for POWERGRID ltd. This Transformer is required for India's First ±800 kV, 6000MW HVDC multi-terminal Transmission line from North East to Agra and is executed along with M/s ABB AB, Sweden.
The manufacturing of this HVDC Convertor Transformer was undertaken at BHEl’s state of art new Transformer Manufacturing facility at Bhopal Plant, in strict controlled conditions of humidity, temperature and cleanliness accompanied with highly skilled manpower. This was needed to ensure the compliance as per the stringent requirements of the HVDC operations.
BHEl demonstrated its capability by successfully performing stringent testing on this Converter Transformer in presence of Powergrid & ABB AB Sweden representative. For the first time, Converter Transformer is tested at highest level of lightning impulse at 1800 kVp, AC Power frequency at 944 kV and DC voltage testing at 1275 kV as per International Standards requirement. Further Partial Discharge levels measured too were well below the norms specified in International Standards.
With above success, BHEl now joins the elite league of the very few world class transformer manufacturers having the capability of manufacturing and testing of 800 kV Class HVDC Converter Transformer. This transformer has the shipping weight of 312 Tons.
Earlier to this, BHEl has already successfully manufactured, tested and supplied 22units of 400kV HVDC Converter transformers for this project at Agra, Biswanath Chariyali and Alipurduar sites of M/s Powergrid.
In HVDC Segment, BHEl has already supplied Converter Transformers in 1985-1986 for Country’s first HVDC line between Barsoor (Chhattisgarh) and lower Sileru ( Andhra Pradesh).
later BHEl has also supplied HVDC Converter Transformers to many HVDC Projects including NTPC’s ± 500 kV HVDC link between Rihand and Dadri (Yr 1988-89), MSETCl’s ± 500 kV HVDC link between Chandrapur and Phadge (Yr 1996-97), POWERGRID’s ± 500 kV HVDC link between Balia and Bhiwadi (Yr 2011-12) and now for POWERGRID’s ± 800 kV HVDC link between North East and Agra (Yr 2015-17).
Significantly, BHEl has also supplied 1200 kV, 333 MVA, 1 Phase, UHVAC Auto Transformer to POWERGRID for 1200 kV, UHVAC Bina experimental test station, which is under successful operation.
Furthermore, BHEl has also supplied 765 kV class Generator Transformers, Auto Transformers and Shunt Reactors for various Generation and Transmission projects.
And with these remarkable accomplishments, BHEl has established itself as one of the pioneers of the UHVAC & HVDC equipment across the Globe.
It is fully equipped to fulfill the entire range of requirements of Power Transformers & Special transformers upto 1200 kV UHVAC and ± 800 kV HVDC meeting national and International Standards.
