BFR training focuses on low intensity exercise with high intensity training results: Dr Firoz Shaikh

Sports Injury is a very serious matter when it comes to the unprecedented time and while playing the important match. At that moment the heroes behind the stadium come into the picture, yes the sports physiotherapists. They play a crucial part in every tournament. Dr Firoz Shaikh is one of the prominent sports physiotherapists who is working as the Odisha Football Club's Head Physiotherapist. He has been working in the top division of Indian football for the last 5 years.

He always spread knowledge about his works and the basics of sports physiotherapy, and he has shared about the Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training in brief.

BFR training is a strategy that combines low-intensity exercise with blood flow obstruction to create outcomes that are comparable to high-intensity training. It's been around for a while in the gym, but it's becoming more popular in clinical settings.

Dr Firoz explains that, the concept of BFR training is that by restricting venous blood flow (the return of blood to the heart), some of the mechanisms believed to be involved in hypertrophy (muscle growth) can be stimulated and exaggerated so that growth can be triggered without the need to lift heavy loads.

Sports physio, Dr Firoz Shaikh further said, "It’s done by wearing a restrictive wrap around the upper portion of a limb. Ideally, I would be a specialised BFR training cuff-like device that can precisely measure the pressure being applied. The wrap is tightened to allow arterial blood flow to maintained (allowing oxygenated blood to continue to flow to the muscles) but while simultaneously restricting the return of blood to the heart. This has a blood pooling effect."
