On the second day of the West Bengal Mahaotsav, a Bengali film — Pather Panchali — was screened before the art lovers of the city. Made by Satyajit Ray, regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema, Pather Panchali was screened at Abhirang Auditorium, Bharat Bhavan. It was based on a novel by Bhibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay.
Notably, the weeklong theatre festival is all about bringing the culture and traditions of theatres of West Bengal among the audience of the city of lakes. During the theatre fest, various theatrical activities will be presented including, music, plays and films. The film features the best relationship of the humanity i.e. a relationship between a brother and a sister and delicate emotions they share together being into this relationship.
The film is about brother and sister, Durga and Apu, growing-up as best friends in their ancestral home in rural Bengal. The film takes an interesting turn after Durga’s death, when Apu throws the necklace which she stole (and whose hiding spot only Apu knew) into the pond. The lotus leaves cover up the place where the necklace enters the water- the burial of a small secret memory in collusion with nature. Will Apu move on with his life after his sister’s deathIJ A heart touching movie and a heart warming concept managed to entertain the audience even today.
The movie features Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Subir Banerjee and Chunibala Devi. Notably, the movie was screened in the first session of the second day’s schedule of West Bengal Mahotsav. The screening evoked a good response by the audience.
