A Hindi play Basawan Mama was performed here on Wednesday at Bharat Bhavan. The play marked the second day of Madhya Pradesh Rangotsav at Antarang Hall Bharat Bhavan.

Directed by Mohit Jain, the play was brilliantly performed by the artists of Darpan Rangsamuh, Katni. The play is all about a Bagheli folklore about Mama Basawan.

Basawan Mama is a story of a man who immensely love trees and nature. The play showcases that people like Basawan Mama are still needed in the society. Mixing and matching the story with the contemporary society, the play was wondrously staged at Antarang leaving the audience totally enthralled.

The play begins with introducing the characters on stage. It surrounds the story of a man and his struggle to save nature. His story is remembered even today and his cleverness has set an example for people.

Once, a king orders his soldiers to cut off a huge tree of the village. The tree was a hurdle in his developmental plan. A man who was in real love with nature was against the decision of the king. He did many attemots to stop this, but every time was failed.

The king did not change his decision and Mama Basawan gets really hurt with this act.

To teach the king a lesson and to break his pride, Basawan disguises himself as a Demigod. He tries to destroy king’s family, but when the prince calls him ‘Mama’ with affection, he stops the destruction. Hence, he was named as ‘Basawan Mama’.

The folklore was presented beautifully with the instrumental music and vibrant light design. The play was brilliantly performed on stage and was much appreciated by the audience.
