Hong Kong based shipping company Anglo Eastern Group has planned a massive awareness campaign in Indore and Bhopal to educate school students on career opportunities aboard Merchant Navy vessels popularly known as Cargo Ships.

The senior executives of Indian subsidiary of Anglo Eastern Group, Anglo Eastern Ship Management India limited will commence the proposed awareness campaign in Madhya Pradesh, in August 2013 onwards.

Captain Vinay Singh, Managing Director, Anglo Eastern Ship Management India limited said, “Our endeavour is to offer an excellent career in Merchant Navy to the young students of India. Eventually, that will strengthen the economy of our country as salary structures across various levels in Merchant Navy are highly attractive. Young cadets are paid huge stipends as fresh recruits, and after about four to five years of joining Merchant Navy, these cadets start earning tax free salary of around Rs 2 lakh per month as Third Officers. Once these cadets reach the age of around 30 years, within 10-15 years after joining Merchant Navy, they start earning around Rs 5 lakh per month as Captains aboard Cargo ships across the globe.”

Currently, about 1 lakh Indian citizens (its 7 per cent of the total workforce in Merchant Navy in the world) work aboard about 50,000 cargo ships across the globe. By 2020, this share of Indian workforce is likely to rise at about 9 per cent due to various initiatives taken by Indian Ministry of Shipping and reputed shipping companies like Anglo Eastern Group in India.
