Anti-project groups observe Black Day

SR

Several voluntary organisations observed black day on Monday against establishing nuclear power plant in Chutka village of Mandla district. The organisations alleged that the project is being implemented forcibly by both Central and the State Government without public consensus which is totally unconstitutional.

Organisations apart from launching agitation at Board Office square on Monday, also filed a petition with the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC). The commission has accepted the petition instructed for constituting a divisional bench for hearing the petition.

Notably, the Government had to cancel two public hearings citing opposition by local residents. The third hearing was completed at Chutka on Monday and the administration succeeded in keeping aloof those people who were against the project. Both the Governments had deployed heavy police force near Chutka to control the protest, they alleged.

The organisations have appealed to the Chief Minister and the Governor to cancel the nuclear power project in view of the devastating outcome of this project.

The speakers on the occasion said that developed nations such as America, France, Great Britain and Japan have deferred their nuclear projects honouring the demand of their people. On the contrary, in India, both State and Central Governments are overlooking the demands of the people and adverse effects of nuclear power, they added.

Representatives of these organizations said that this is a way towards repetition of Bhopal gas tragedy, which had claimed thousands of lives in 1984.

The Governments have always kept public’s view in second to corporate sector’s profit. The nuclear project is also being set up to benefit Multi National Companies (MNCs). They asked the residents of Bhopal to raise voice against it else it would be impossible to save people from devastating effects of nuclear power.
