Demanding facilities at par with other medical colleges, Students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal remained on a day-long strike on Friday.

Since, nobody from the administration approached them till date regarding considering their demands, all the 210 students of AIIMS threatened to go on indefinite strike from Monday if institute administration failed to act on their demands. The protesting students have urged intervention of eight-member AIIMS Institute body headed by Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to address to problems at Bhopal institute.

The MBBS and nursing college students at the institute alleged they are missing practical education as AIIMS Bhopal lacks a fully functional hospital and minimum facilities as prescribed by Medical Council India (MCI). The students have alleged that they are missing practical education, even around two years after the medical college became functional at the AIIMS.

Earlier this week, both MBBS and nursing students had put forth their complaint in a letter to AIIMS Bhopal director Dr Sandeep Kumar claiming that the medical college does not have in-patient hospital services (IPD), proper laboratories, well-equipped library and faces shortage of faculty, all of which are mandatory under Medical Council India (MCI).

In his reply two days ago, Dr Kumar had claimed that AIIMS Bhopal 30-bedded IPD would commence within a fortnight and 300-bedded hospital will start functioning in 3 months. However, the students feel that the promises would not be fulfilled with the pace of works going on at the institute.
