If the district administration translates its ideas into a reality, the much ‘maligned’ Khan river of the city will be developed on the pattern of Sabarmati river front in Ahmedabad through its purification and beautification. Besides, steps will also be taken to link Khan River with Ganga Action Plan.

This was stated by Indore divisional commissioner Sanjay Dube while chairing a meeting on purification of Khan River hereon Tuesday.

Reiterating government’s resolve to purify Khan River, commissioner said the administration besides stopping flow of unclean drainage water into the Khan River, will also widen its embankment, clean the river and would further deepen its river-bed. He said there is also a possibility of getting fund for the cleanliness of Khan River from the Central government following initiative of the lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

He said as per the latest survey carried out by the revenue department, there are around 4,406 encroachments alongside Khan River, which has chocked its flow. Under its cleanliness drive, all the illegal encroachments alongside the river would be dismantled in order to    widen its embankment, commissioner said adding that in order to ensure regular flow of water in Khan river,  water from Bilabali pond, Pipliyapala pond and  Vijaypur pond would be diverted into the    river. Steps would also be taken to deepen these ponds with the help of central water resources department.

Commissioner said under the Khan river purification scheme, no permanent structure would be allowed in 30 meter wide vicinity of river embankment. Permission will be given only for the construction of roads and gardens, he added.

Under the purification scheme, a sewerage treatment plant would also be set, besides construction of sewerage treatment plants would be made compulsory for all industries situated on the embankment of Khan river, Dube informed. The meeting among others was attended by IMC commissioner Rakesh Singh, additional collector Alok Kumar Singh and other senior  officials from the district  administration, Indore Development Authority and the Indore municipal corporation.
