BJP, Cong in eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation in Sagar

Sagar: Though ten candidates are trying their fortunes in Bundelkhand region's Sagar parliamentary constituency, the chief contest is between the Congress and the BJP as was the case in the previous election. This time, the Congress has laid siege to this constituency that is established as a virtually impregnable saffron citadel. The Congress nominee is Govind Rajput who twice represented this constituency's Surkhi Assembly segment. In last year's Vidhan Sabha polls, he lost by a wafer-thin margin of 142 votes to the state's ruling BJP. Sidelining the ticket-related claims of diligent workers, the saffron party has reposed faith in lakshminarayan Yadav (70) who owed allegiance to several parties at different times. The State's senior Minister Gopal Bhargava was lobbying to obtain the ticket for his son Abhishek and another Minister Bhupendra Singh Thakur was doing the same for his wife Saroj. Both ministers wield considerable influence in local politics. The party's decision caused tremendous discontentment among BJP office-bearers and workers besides the brahmin and Dangi communities.
