With rapid globalisation, economies have to accommodate the best practices worldwide in order to stay competitive and produce the best human resource. “Employers aren’t just looking to recruit skilled employees.

The focus of universities now is to make students industry ready. Companies would want to recruit a student, who along with the knowledge of mechanical engineering also has some knowledge of programming,” Shalini, professor (IT), Dehradun Institute of Technology, tells you.

An effort is also being made to ensure students get a global exposure by mastering themselves not only in English language but also other foreign languages. Some universities are also offering diploma in a foreign language in the first year. To increase the skills of students, universities are also entering into Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with  international companies to provide certification course in Oracle programming and software development.

The focus is to prepare students for current needs of the industry which goes beyond the core university curriculum. Integrated programmes are being provided which lends a better insight on the subjects. The focus has now shifted to more application-based content rather than conventional programmes. Courses in cloud computing and mobile technology are also coming up which never existed in India earlier.

These courses are coming in collaboration with IBM. “In today’s time one can’t restrict themselves in any particular field, there is a need for overall development. Percentage is secondary, what matters is the way you express yourself in front of the employer,” adds Arindam Chatterjee, GD Goenka University.

Renowned industry experts are being called to the campus to interact with budding professionals and discuss the challenges they are going to face during their professional life as they take charge. With the rupee hitting a new low studying outside is all set to be be costlier, but the good news is that some Universities in India are also providing  a chance for students to study outside for a year while the rest of course will be completed in India.

The GD Goenka World Institute in partnership with  lancaster University has one such similar programme. They have put together a range of programmes with an opportunity to get the foreign university degree while studying in India. The students are taught by faculty of lancaster and it’s Indian partner as well. These students can study the full course in India or go for a year to lancaster University in UK.

Many universities these days are conducting their own entrance examinations which provides students with another chance to pursue their dream course. In addition to this, these universities also provide up to 100 per cent scholarship based on the performance of the student in the first year of study and also continue it throughout if the student keeps performing well in all of their academic sessions.
