Flip art of learning

Now there is a flipped classroom technique that is trending among website learning modules. Sangeeta Yadav finds out more

What is flipped classroom aboutIJ

The flipped class room module essentially turns around the whole concept of the traditional teaching system. The instruction is delivered online, outside the classroom and “homework” and practice sessions move into the domain of classroom teaching. The role of the teacher therefore shifts from being an instructor who gives one-way lectures to becoming a facilitator with whom the student can connect with at any point in the class. There are collaborative activities that further help the student understand the concepts better.

Education websites such as Meritnation make it possible for teachers to adopt this “flipped classroom” approach inside their classrooms to help them make the most of the teaching-learning process.

What is the ‘School Made Easy’ initiative all aboutIJ

A cornerstone of our venture has been the understanding that learning flourishes only when you focus on a customised approach. In a classroom environment, with 30-40 kids (or even more) it becomes near impossible for a teacher to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each and every student. Our idea is to leverage technology to identify and understand each student’s specific requirements and provide them with customised content.

Online learning facilitated by websites rely heavily on audio visual mediums to provide learners with the best possible ways to understand difficult concepts. High quality, attractive and animated videos, games, puzzles and small quizzes infuse the ‘fun’ element back into studies.

What are the pros and cons of this learning techniqueIJ

The flipped classroom approach has several advantages — better learning outcomes, students develop higher-order-thinking skills, they get access to scarce resources,it gives them  increased flexibility and instant feedback promotes more effective learning.

How does this workIJ

Flip teaching focuses on using technology to leverage learning so that the teacher can concentrate on individual problems of the students, helping them become better equipped to understand problems and finding solutions quickly.

In this framework, a student will ideally be assigned to study the topic by himself by watching a video on the topic. He is then encouraged to apply the knowledge gained by the online tutorial to problems and practical work in the classroom. He is assisted by the supervisor only at the point where he gets stuck. This form of differentiated instruction uses exercises, projects, intensive assessment models to understand the core problem faced by the student in a subject.
