To empower the students to make a difference in the society by teaching the lesser privilege children of their age, Manav Sthali School, Rajendra Nagar, Delhi, in collaboration with Delhi Schools literacy Project (DSlP) and other schools inaugurated its annual literacy week recently. All the guests, students and teachers took the literacy Pledge to make an effort towards educating the illiterate section of the society.
Themed around Digital literacy, each student is volunteering as teachers to teach the importance of digitisation and basic knowledge of various subjects to the learners living in their nearby locality.
“Digitalisation has made our lives easier and hassle-free. It is important for us to take initiatives on an individual level to encourage digitisation amongst the neo-literates. We are bringing people together as a big family to go ahead and update themselves digitally,” Mamta V Bhatnagar, principal, Manav Sthali School, said.
Talking about the initiative, a Class X student of Muskan Midha said: “I’ve taught nearly 160 children and aspire to do so at a large scale. Also our school provides vocational courses of dance, stitching and music on Saturdays to the learners.”
Why Delhi is low in literacy rate, Bhatnagar said: “The main reason is migration of the people who want to get educated but are not able to reside in the same city for a long duration. Or many come to Delhi on daily basis to earn the livings and go back by the end of the day. There is no established institution where they can be taught regularly.”
