‘Believe you can be successful’

In modern workplace, professionalism is must for positive attitude towards work and to climb corporate ladder, says DR AKHIL SHAHANI

Developing the right attitude towards your work can make a critical difference to your chances of success. It can help you deal with challenging circumstances, committing to professional goals, and in improving overall performance. The right attitude helps develop professionalism, which also helps in rising through the ranks in any organisation. As you move up to senior roles, it can be critical in managing your workload and in developing people management skills. Below are some ways to develop the right attitude at work.

Self-belief: People will not believe in you if you do not believe in yourself. So, before attempting to convince others, you must have faith in your own abilities. Self-belief leads one to seek avenues for self-improvement. Above all, believe that you have the ability to be successful. For those of us who find ourselves doubting our abilities, it can sometimes help to fake this same self-belief! When faced with doubt, try to develop a counter belief that stresses on self-abilities and success.

Be self-reliant: Always remember that no one owes you anything, especially success. The responsibility for your self-growth and improvement lies with yourself. Seek avenues for self-improvement and advancement, while developing positivity towards your work. Avoid complaining or using a negative vocabulary when assessing your work. That said, do not hesitate to accept help or in helping others.

Commit to your goals: Setbacks are part of life and an inevitable part of any professional's journey. The only way to deal with such challenges is to commit to your goals despite the occasional roadblock which comes your way. As the saying goes: The road to success is paved with failure. Once you start seeing setbacks as temporary, the path to your goal will seem clearer and inevitable.

Focus on your work: For a professional, the work comes above all else. There can be many distractions, from social media to other disruptions. When faced with such disruptions, it is important to prioritise your work and develop a single-minded approach towards your goal.

You are likely to finish your tasks with higher efficiency with optimum utilisation of your time. However, you must also keep time for family or other social commitments. A balanced approach is the healthiest way to treat your work and personal life.

Continuous learning: Learning is a continuous process that must go on irrespective of age or rank. Adopt a mindset of learning something new every day. In this volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity world, skills and knowledge that you developed in the past quickly can get obsolete in a very short time. Collaborate with others: Workplace collaboration is not just important for a smooth workflow, it is also necessary for your own development. Collaborating with others will help you develop a network. It raises your goodwill, which may come in handy later when you need someone’s help. In a senior position, smart collaboration will also help you to work more efficiently and ensure your team’s overall development.
