Identity crisis could be limiting

Bharat Bhushan Padmadeo

Attention seeking is a common human urge which can be noticed even in early childhood. An ignorant child on instinctive urge will either start crying unprovoked, or do something strange that draws your attention. Another distinctive feature in evidence is the urge to display one’s possessions. If you are able to establish rapport with a child, he will be keen to display all his toys.

As one grows, the above instinctive urge takes the shape of the desire to be widely known and acclaimed. Those imbued with virtues do not have to walk an extra mile for that. Their excellence speaks for itself. Those not groomed well have to make extra efforts to establish their identity. There is nothing wrong in carrying this urge so long as it helps improve upon skill sets, which qualifies one to grow through qualitative efforts. This is how civilisation has progressively grown through conscious efforts since our primitive stage.

Those who fail in their endeavour often fall in the trap of identity crisis, which they may not be even aware of. But it finds reflection in their outward behaviour. Some of them may be tempted to present themselves in a way that they are noticed even when in a crowd. Some others may develop the habit of finding fault with others. They don’t realise that it is their inner urge to prove superior to others is what accounts for the above habit.

The above trend could lead to social unrest if it catches up with group consciousness of those marginalised socially or economically till recent past. Societal churning, coming as it may with growing level of awareness, could lead to such a situation. Those in the lead need to attend this phenomenon well within time before it becomes too late.

This trend, however, takes a disastrous turn when it gets into the head of misguided people, particularly those carrying negative mindset. They could indulge in such desperate acts as may upset even societal peace and harmony. They may act in the garb of exerting religious, social, or political identity.  Racial profiling, terrorism in the name of asserting religious identity, zealots trying to impose their whims and fancies on majority, fall into this category. Consequently, a good part of the world is either in the grip of war or war like situation. No amount of diplomatic initiative or forceful intervention has been able to contain this trend. For, working at the peripheral level is not going to address this malady.

What is urgently needed is to work upon the base level. That calls for giving a lesson in the art of living, right from the childhood, so as to instil a value system in every emerging citizen. The sense of humaneness, reason and order needs to be induced in each mind right from the school days. Accordingly, it should be made a part of the curriculum. Ancient India’s learned masters were conscious of it. If the world order joins hand and takes initiative, it would be possible to shape an orderly future generation. That may lay the ground for peaceful and harmonious coexistence. The initiative may not curb the devilish trend immediately as such, but it could bring salutary results in the coming days.

See how a potential guy has failed to prove his worth on account of indwelling sense of identity crisis. This man impulsively made wrong choices and became a victim of his own making.  The sense of failure bred in a sense of identity crisis. He then got tempted towards quick fix solution to prove himself. Got into lot of weird belief driven practices to get better empowered, but in vain. In a state of desperation, he came seeking guidance. He was advised to overcome his mental predicament, and instead work upon inherent frailties to facilitate his potential to speak for itself.

look at his astrological pointers. Wisdom signifying Jupiter conjunct intellectually ordained Uranus, both well oriented to Mercury, the planet marked with intelligence, speaks of a genius. But what plays spoilsport is his impulsive nature as would Aries lagna imply, who may not apply proper forethought before jumping into action.  Added to that are the two luminaries, the Sun and Moon, placed adverse to mischievous Neptune. That makes him stuck to self-delusion distanced from ground realities, not open to acknowledge truth on its first appearance till pushed to the wall. The result is there to see. Following the advice as suggested, sense of reasons has dawned upon him, and is now performing better.
