Address mental maladies promptly

Bharat Bhushan Padmadeo

In the developed world, people seek immediate psychiatric help when they notice repeated unusual behaviour, even in the event of being high on anger or attention deficiency. The paradox, however, with most of the Indians, even highly qualified ones, is that they resist seeking medical help even for serious mental maladies till the situation goes out of control.

A lady used to consult me from outstation about her errant child. The child’s astrological chart presented a fit case for medical intervention. Accordingly, she was advised to seek psychiatric help, to be followed by regular counselling by a proven counsellor, as I could not do justice from such a long distance and that too over telephone. But the lady resisted for almost two years till the situation totally slipped out of her hand.

“Once I take my child to a psychiatric, he may earn a bad tag, difficult to face the world. Even the child may later carry the grudge against me for earning him such a bad name. Also, it will be difficult for the child to relate on even terms with his peer group. Better suggest some religious remedial measure,” she would ask.“Why do you have to prove before anybody and everybodyIJ Better look to your child’s welfare. Should you avoid proper treatment well in time, I am afraid soon your child may go totally berserk,” I used to tell her.

And exactly as expected, one day the lady called up in a state of desperation when her son began breaking all glass material and broke the television set. She was advised to forcefully take the child to a psychiatry ward and get him admitted for a while, even if it requires physical help from the hospital. The child, when forcefully admitted, it was discovered that he had become a drug addict.    Following treatment, the child came out of his woes within three months. And now, he has been counselling drug addicts in a rehabilitation centre.

It’s now the turn of someone who had put the above lady through to me.Despite being reminded about what went with the case she had earlier recommended, she is now resisting her child getting psychiatric treatment.“My son’s case is different. My child is lazy who does not want to take pains, is stubborn, and suffers from complex.  Most of the time, he behaves normally. It is only when things do not move to his asking that he begins throwing tantrums. So,how can you draw a parallel with the above caseIJ” she argued.

Agreed, there is no ground to draw a parallel with the above case. But let me tell you that mental maladies have varied dimensions, and accordingly, the course of treatment would also differ.  In most of the cases, the person concerned may behave normally most of the time. But on some of the issues they get stuck and become oversensitive.

Whenever those issues arise, they lose all sense of direction and reason; their thought process temporarily becomes incoherent and incomprehensible in worldly sense. This is what has been happening with your child. And then indwelling complexes in mind lend strong ground for mental maladies. Should you delay treatment, he may soon slip out of hands, I suggested.  And then let me make it clear, astrology knows no bias, and if it points to mental malady, it must be attended to promptly. And no belief-driven puja can do any good, particularly when medical intervention becomes the need of the hour.

look at the child’s horoscope. In astrological parlance, the markers for one’s mental state are mind signifying Moon, and Mercury, the planet identified with intelligence. The two are not only placed adverse to each other, they are also locked in adverse formation to erratic Uranus and mischievous Neptune. That makes him a habitual escapist stuck to self-delusions, living in a world of dreams distant from ground reality. He has a mercurial temperament, would be careless and mentally unstable. He is vulnerable to get influenced by unreliable friends. Mars placed opposite Saturn makes him impatient, habitually suspicious of all, argumentative, and ill-tempered.

Moon placed adverse to Saturn brings in a sense of negativity, indolence and inertia. It will be difficult for him to remain focused for long. On top of that is his volatile emotionality as would Venus placed adverse to the Sun imply. All put together makes him vulnerable to develop a complex and invite psychiatric problem. I wish the lady wakes up and takes the call without further loss of time.
