Tusker tramples woman in Garhwa

Friday, 28 March 2025 | Nityanand Dubey | Garhwa

In Birajpur, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ramkanda police station, a woman was tragically killed after being trampled by a herd of elephants, on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Devmani Devi, a resident of Birajpur village and the wife of Ramjeet Singh.

According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 am while the woman was gathering mahua flowers in the forest near her home, accompanied by her grandchildren. A herd of elephants suddenly emerged, making loud trumpeting sounds. The grandchildren, upon seeing the approaching elephants, warned their grandmother and ran to safety. Sadly, Devmani Devi, due to her age, was unable to escape and was trampled to death by the herd. Other people who were also collecting mahua flowers in the vicinity managed to flee and survived.

Following the report of the incident, a large crowd congregated at the location. Ranger Ajay Toppo and forest staff arrived to evaluate the situation and offered immediate financial aid of ₹50,000 to the victim's family. They also reassured the family that full compensation would be provided once the required documentation was completed.
