As Punjab gears up for a bumper wheat harvest, the State Government has pulled out all the stops to ensure a smooth and hassle-free procurement season. Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak on Sunday declared that no staff will be allowed leave during the procurement period — unless there’s an exceptional reason.
“We’re expecting more than 124 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat this year, and we’re committed to buying every single grain that farmers bring,” said Kataruchak after a review meeting with officials from five districts including Ludhiana and Moga. “Over eight lakh farmers will benefit from these arrangements, and we won’t allow any lapses,” he said.
“No leave will be allowed for the staff working on procurement unless there’s a very strong reason, and they have to stay present in the grain markets to facilitate the farmers,” said the Minister, while instructing the officials to stay at the markets throughout the season to make sure farmers don’t face any difficulties.
To manage the influx, the state has set up 1,864 grain markets and 600 temporary yards. Kataruchak took stock of the facilities for farmers, like cleanliness, drinking water, lighting, shaded spots, sanitation, fans, and first-aid kits have been ensured at all procurement centers.
Kataruchak also confirmed that the Cash Credit Limit of Rs 28,894 crore has been secured to facilitate timely payments. Farmers will receive their dues within 24 hours of selling their produce, at an MSP of Rs 2,425 per quintal.
Nearly 99 percent of required gunny bags are already in place, along with ample storage and transport arrangements. “Procurement is not just a transaction; it’s our promise to the farmers,” said the Minister, instructing officials to stay stationed at the mandis throughout the season.
