Stray dog seen carrying dead newborn in Rewa

Friday, 14 March 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

In a shocking incident from Rewa city, a stray dog was found carrying a dead newborn baby in its mouth, prompting the police to initiate a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for abandoning the infant.

A disturbing video capturing the dog wandering through narrow alleys at night with the infant’s body clutched in its jaws has gone viral on social media, sparking public outrage.

The unsettling footage was reportedly recorded near Kabaddi Mohalla at Jaystambh Chowk, within the jurisdiction of the Civil Lines police station.

This incident marks the third case in Rewa within the past one-and-a-half months where a newborn has been found discarded, police confirmed. Notably, it is the second instance where a stray dog was seen carrying the body of a deceased infant.

"A video surfaced two days ago (Tuesday), showing a stray dog carrying a dead newborn baby in its mouth," said Rewa Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Singh.

"The scene was extremely distressing. Upon receiving the information, a team from Civil Lines police station was immediately dispatched to the location. The dog's movements were tracked, and the infant’s body was eventually recovered after the dog dropped it when chased away. The body has since been placed in the mortuary," he added.

SP Singh further mentioned that the police are meticulously analyzing the video footage and interrogating those who recorded the visuals.

"We are making every effort to identify and bring to justice the individual responsible for this heartless act of abandoning a newborn. We have also urged the public to share any information they might have regarding the case, assuring them that their identities will be kept confidential," Singh stated.

Addressing the previous cases of abandoned infants, Singh confirmed that an earlier incident, where another stray dog was seen carrying a newborn’s body, occurred near the government medical college, and appropriate action has already been taken. The police continue to intensify their investigation, while the chilling incident has raised concerns over child abandonment and the need for stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable lives.
