Steel Minister assures swift action on key projects

Wednesday, 29 January 2025 | PNS | BOKARO

Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, along with Minister of State for Steel, Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, addressed the media during their departure from Bokaro. They summarized the key outcomes of their two-day visit, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transforming Bokaro into a hub of industrial excellence through significant investments, improved infrastructure, and sustainable practices.

The ministers emphasized the Rs 20,000 crore brownfield expansion plan for Bokaro Steel Plant, which aims to increase production capacity from 5.25 MTPA to 7.55 MTPA. Kumaraswamy highlighted that the expansion, which includes advanced facilities such as a 4500 cubic meter blast furnace and thin slab casting and direct rolling systems, aligns with India’s goal of producing 300 MTPA steel by 2030. The project will generate 2,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs, significantly boosting local employment opportunities.

Both ministers assured that the much-anticipated Bokaro airport would begin operations soon. Kumaraswamy noted that the matter is under review and promised swift action to ensure the airport is operational at the earliest, facilitating regional connectivity and accelerating industrial growth.

Speaking on SAIL’s leadership, Kumaraswamy and Varma expressed confidence in SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash and Bokaro Steel Plant Director-in-Charge B.K. Tiwari. They praised their efforts to overcome global challenges in the steel market and drive modernization. Kumaraswamy added that he is personally reviewing key projects regularly to ensure a unified and efficient approach in addressing challenges and achieving milestones.

The ministers also emphasized sustainability, with Kumaraswamy highlighting Bokaro Steel Plant’s plans to reduce carbon emissions from 2.67 tonnes to below 2.2 tonnes per tonne of crude steel by 2030. Ongoing renewable energy initiatives, such as a 30 MW floating solar power plant and 100 MW of power procurement through SECI, were cited as crucial steps toward environmentally friendly steel production.

During their visit, the ministers reviewed progress at the Tasra Coal Mine and Chasnalla Washery, key projects aimed at reducing reliance on imported coking coal. The Tasra Coal Mine, scheduled to begin operations by September 2025, will produce 3.5 MTPA of domestic coking coal. Varma noted that these projects are essential for ensuring raw material security and aligning with India’s self-reliance goals.

As they departed, both Kumaraswamy and Varma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Bokaro into a major industrial hub, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. They thanked the SAIL leadership and local stakeholders for their cooperation and assured continued support for the region’s development.
