The highly anticipated second edition of the Cricket League for Sikhs (CLS) is set to kick off at the Co-operative College Ground in Bistupur from April 7 to April 9. Organized under the aegis of the Central Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (CGPC), this three-day event aims to provide a dedicated platform for Sikh youth to display their sporting prowess.
At a press conference held at the CGPC office on Sunday, CGPC President Sardar Bhagwan Singh, General Secretary Amarjit Singh, and Gurcharan Singh Billa, along with Sports Wing members Baljeet Sansoa, Sukhdev Singh Bittu, and Gurnam Singh Bedi, shared details of the tournament. They expressed enthusiasm over the successful inaugural edition last year and highlighted their commitment to fostering sports among Sikh players.
Organizing Committee Director Pradhan Bhagwan Singh emphasized that the tournament is designed to encourage Sikh youth in Kolhan to step away from virtual distractions and engage in physical sports. “Our goal is to motivate young players to sweat it out on the field instead of being trapped in the illusion of mobile screens,” he said.
Amarjit Singh and Gurcharan Singh Billa announced that the winning team will be awarded a cash prize of ₹5,000 along with a championship trophy, while the runner-up team will receive ₹2,500. Individual awards such as Player of the Match, Player of the Series, Best Batsman, and Best Bowler will also be presented. Additionally, all players from the winning and runner-up teams will be honored with medals.
CGPC Chairman Sardar Shailendra Singh, present at the conference, urged parents to encourage their children’s participation in this grand sporting event.
According to Technical Director Baljeet Sansoa, the tournament will accommodate a minimum of eight and a maximum of 12 teams, with slots being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. So far, five teams have confirmed their participation.
Sukhwant Singh Sukhu mentioned that the cricket league is being dedicated to the Sikh festival of Khalsa Creation Day (Baisakhi). He added that from next year, the event may be scheduled alongside the Hola-Mahalla festival for an even grander celebration.
Committee members Sukhdev Singh Bittu, Gurnam Singh Bedi, and Sarabjit Singh Grewal clarified that only Sikh players are eligible to participate, meaning non-Sikhs and individuals who have shaved their beards or hair cannot take part.
