With the onset of summer, several parts of Jharkhand are experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring beyond 40 degrees Celsius. The Kolhan and Palamu regions have been particularly affected, recording some of the highest temperatures in the state.
According to meteorological data, Jamshedpur registered a maximum temperature of 40.4 degrees Celsius on Friday, while Daltonganj recorded 40.5 degrees Celsius. Similarly, Chaibasa in West Singhbhum district also experienced extreme heat, with temperatures touching 40 degrees. Other parts of the state, including Ranchi, saw relatively lower temperatures, with the capital recording 35.3 degrees Celsius. However, Bokaro Steel City came close to the 40-degree mark, adding to the discomfort of residents.
Experts at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, have indicated that dry and clear weather conditions will persist across the state in the coming days. Satellite images and weather model analyses suggest no significant thunderstorm or lightning activity in the near future, further intensifying the heatwave.
Residents across Jharkhand are struggling to cope with the sweltering conditions, with many preferring to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours. Public health officials have issued advisories urging people to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Hospitals have also reported an increase in cases of heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heat strokes.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, meteorologists have provided some relief by predicting a slight dip in maximum temperatures over the next couple of days. This, however, may not be significant enough to provide immediate comfort to those affected by the scorching heat.
The severe heat has also raised concerns among environmentalists and urban planners regarding the impact of climate change and deforestation in the region. Experts are calling for increased afforestation, sustainable urban planning, and better water management strategies to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures in the long run.
As Jharkhand continues to grapple with the unrelenting summer heat, citizens are urged to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant against heat-related health risks.
