Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's vision to enhance connectivity and ease access for saints, seers, and devotees is taking shape in the form of the Ujjain-Indore six-lane road project, aimed at supporting the Simhastha Mahakumbh in 2028.
President Droupadi Murmu laid the foundation for the project on September 19, 2024. After completing the preliminary formalities, construction began on January 15. The road will extend from Indore's Aurobindo Medical College to the Hari Phatak Square in Ujjain, transforming the existing four-lane road into a six-lane highway with a paved shoulder under the hybrid annuity mode.
As part of the project, two service lanes on each side will be built along the urban stretch of both cities, easing local traffic and reducing accidents. The improved road will also assist with crowd management during Simhastha-2028. Once completed, travel time from Indore to Ujjain will be reduced from 80 minutes to just 45 minutes.
The project includes the construction of large bridges over the Kshipra and Kanh rivers, flyovers at the Mahamrityunjay Gate T-junction and Shanti Palace Square in Ujjain, six vehicular underpasses including one each at Dharmapuri, Panthpiplai village, and the Engineering College Square in Ujjain, and three at Sanver, along with other infrastructure such as truck and bus lay-bys and small bridges.
The total construction cost for the Ujjain-Indore six-lane road is Rs 1692 crore. The project is expected to be completed by January 14, 2027, after which the construction agency will maintain the road for the next 15 years. Over the next 17 years, the total expenditure on the project will amount to Rs 1692 crore.
This infrastructure development will facilitate smooth traffic, fostering industrialisation between Ujjain and Indore, and create new economic activities and employment opportunities in Ujjain and surrounding districts.
