Rise in mathematical acumen among Jharkhand students: ASER

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) released on January 28, states that in Jharkhand there has been a significant increase in the percentage of children of Class V who can now solve a division problem. This figure has been recorded at 30.3% in 2024 while it was earlier at 19% in the year 2018 and 24.5% in 2022.

At the national level too there has been an improvement in the same. While in 2018, it stood at 24.9%, it had dropped to 25.6% in 2022 but has now increased to 30.7% in 2024. The change has been seen mainly in government schools.

The data further reveals that the performance of students in basic mathematics has also improved in Jharkhand from 44.4% in 2018 to 45.3% in 2022 and 50.9% in 2024. However, this statistic at the national level remains the same. It was recorded at 44.1% in 2018, 44.7% in 2022 and is currently at 45.8% in 2024.

There has been a rise in the State level figure for Class III children who can solve a subtraction problem as well. The figure in both 2018 and 2022 was at 22.6% which has now risen to 31.8% in 2024. The survey also states that amongst government school students, the figure rose from 14.8% in 2018 to 16.3% in 2022 rising further to 24.6% in 2024.

Correspondingly, the national numbers for Class III students who are able to solve subtraction problems was observed at 28.2% in 2018 which had dropped to 25.9% in 2022 and is 33.7% in 2024. Among government school students, the figure rose from 20.8% in 2018 and 20.2% in 2022 to 27.6% in 2024. There has been a slight improvement for private school students in this number, the survey revealed.

For the first time since the start of ASER survey in 2005, basic reading skills for Class III children enrolled in government schools is recorded to be the highest at the national level as per the ASER 2024. As per the survey in 2018, in Jharkhand the percentage of Class III children who could read a Class II level text was 11%. This figure fell to 9.5% in the year 2022 while in 2024 it stands at 14.1%.

Nationally, in 2018, the percentage of Class III students who were able to read a Class II level text was 20.9%, the figure declined to 16.3% in 2022 and rose to 23.4% in 2024.

ASER assesses reading by checking whether a child can read letters, words, a simple paragraph at Class I level or a story at Class II level these tasks are assigned to each student aged between 5 to 16 years, one at a time in selected households and children re marked at the highest level at which he or she can read comfortably. This methodology has been the same since 2006, thus making comparisons possible with time.

The proportion of Class V children in government school in Jharkhand who can read a text of Class II level was 29.4% in 2018, 31.6% in 2022 and is at 40.3% in 2024. At the national level, reading among Class V children reached pre- Covid levels especially amongst those enrolled in schools. In government schools, this data was 44.2% in 2018, 38.5% in 2022 and is now at 44.8% in 2024.

The survey also states that the reading levels have increased among Class VIII students enrolled in government schools. For Jharkhand, this static was at 62.7% in 2022 and is at 66.5% in 2024.
